NEC advocates “Digital Inclusion” as a future society where digital technology has penetrated every aspect of our lives. In order to successfully deploy technology as a solution to address societal issues, it must first gain public acceptance. Ensuring public understanding and consent is especially critical when utilizing advanced technologies, such as AI and biometric authentication. Introduced below are the ten most accessed articles on this topic during the period of October 2019 to March 2020.
SAFEBORDER as SSL VPN Uniquely Enables New Style of Business Communications by Connecting Corporate Intranets and the Internet Seamlessly
SAFEBORDER is an SSL VPN appliance product that offers a unique remote access solution to any customer. The SSL VPN market in Japan was first addressed a year ago by several leading vendors including NEC, and has been growing very fast since. Many corporations are about to come up with new ways of business operations and models utilizing the Internet far more effectively than ever by taking advantage many benefits of SSL VPN and the rapid development of broadband communications. Many corporations have already moved to the new network environment for the next stage of their corporate IT activities. SSL VPN is expected to play important roles in connecting people with people and data sources instantly through the Internet. In this paper, basic technologies and benefits of SSL VPN are discussed, and SAFEBORDER’s unique features are then explained to show how it can change corporate IT and business operations in their use of the Internet.

Optical Access
The means of broadband connections to communication carriers and service providers is shifting from metallic access using telephone lines to optical access using optical fibers that feature a high-speed data communication capability. In addition, the demand is on the increase for a triple play system, in which a single broadband connection provides telephone and broadcasting services at the same time as an Internet service.
This paper aims to provide an overview of the requirements of the optical access system of the next generation network (NGN). It goes on to review the future orientation of the main functions of the NGN and introduces some of the efforts that are being made by NEC in this field.

“Dynamic Collaboration” : the shape of a new business that quickly responds to changes in the market through “The integrated IT/Network solutions” provided by NEC
Companies are searching for a new business model in the midst of unclear, chaotic and fast-changing economic circumstances, as exemplified by increasing globalization and rapid changes in the market environment. The focus of these companies is on “creating new corporate value through quicker and more dynamic response to accelerating changes in the market.” NEC believes that the shape of the next-generation business will be one in which each company enhances its own competencies and strengths, and uses these core competencies to collaborate with other companies. On June 10, 2003, NEC introduced this concept of “Dynamic Collaboration - making your business grow -.” This message is a promise that NEC will support its customers’ business innovation and creation of new value. In order to fulfill this promise, we at NEC are determined to resolve our customers’ management issues by offering business solutions that converge our advanced computing and networking technologies, and thereby serve as a business partner that evolves along side our customers.
Development of Large-Capacity Laminated Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery (High Power Type)
The applications of lithium ion rechargeable batteries have recently been expanding in the high current requirement fields as these devices begin to be used in electrical tools such as for impact drivers and hammer drills.
NEC TOKIN has newly developed and commercialized a 3Ah class, high power, large-capacity lithium ion rechargeable battery by applying its expertise in materials technology and associated techniques that have been gained in the commercialization of large-capacity batteries. The newly developed high power, large-capacity lithium ion rechargeable battery, "IML126070" is capable of a continuous 30A discharge and a quick 13-minute discharge (90% recharging) due to; 1) the use of electrode materials proven in the development of electrically assisted bicycles; 2) a review of electrode specifications to provide compatibility with high current discharge and rapid charging, and; 3) improvement and optimization of the current collector structure to provide compatibility with high current and higher energy levels.

Ocean-Bottom Seismographic Observation Systems
Since the first offshore installation at Omaezaki, Shizuoka-ken, in August 1978, a total of eight “cable-based” ocean-bottom seismographic observation systems (In-Line type systems) have been installed for use in the real-time observation of earthquake and tsunami data on the Pacific side of the Japanese Archipelago. These systems are applying a digital communication technology and a high reliable technology of the submarine cable system. On the other hand, development of the “NODE type system” featuring two dimensional observations by seismometer and tsunami sensors deployed planarly was started in the USA, Japan and European countries around the year 2000. This paper introduces the technologies applied to the earlier In-Line type systems as well as outlining the most advanced system technologies used in the currently deployed NODE type systems.

Emergency Mobile Radio Network based on Software-Defined Radio
With growing awareness of natural disasters, border intrusions, and other crises, the demand for on-site information sharing has increased. However, conventional network systems entail some serious issues such as a variety of frequency bands, waveforms and protocols, and the use of base stations. These problems make it hard to communicate with each other when an emergency situation arises. NEC is rising to the challenge through improvements in on-site information sharing by virtue of development in Software-Defined Radio (SDR) and Ad-hoc network. This paper introduces Emergency Mobile Radio based on SDR and other SDR-based products.
